On Friday, October 12, the yachting community will come together at Newport Shipyard to paddle in the Shipyard’s annual “Pumpkin Regatta” which raised over $8,200 for hurricane relief organizations and the Warrior Sailing Program in 2017. Different charities are chosen each year and this year, Shipyard employees chose to once again support Warrior Sailing Program which provides maritime education and outreach for wounded, ill, and injured service members. Newport Shipyard has also partnered with Monique Graham, a local hairstylist at Frank Antonio Hair and Makeup in Newport, who raises money with a group of friends and colleagues each month for a select charity, and this month they have chosen the Women’s Resource Center of Newport.

'Lest we Forget' 9/11Tradition Continues with 17th Annual Race Around Jamestown
The Sail for Hope has become an annual tradition for local sailors who want to continue to show their patriotism and raise funds for others in need. The first event was titled “Sail for Pride” which was organized in the wake of the 9/11 attacks on the U.S. The name “Sail for Pride” was retired, and since 2001 Sail for Hope has raised over $1,000,000 for various non-profit organizations.

Newport Shipyard has been sponsoring the race for six years and sends a team of volunteers down every February to help run the event.
Seven teams comprised of yacht captains and crew gathered at the Catamaran Club on Friday, February 9 to compete in the Wobbly Race which featured a new twist on an old tradition. Instead of using the Build Your Own Boat (BYOB) format, race organizers decided to save wood and other materials in lieu of hurricane damage to Barbuda and other Caribbean islands. “We organized a ‘superhero challenge’ format instead this year,” said Jay Mulrooney, project manager at Newport Shipyard who is one of the race’s biggest champions.

Dates for the four-day event, which welcomes registered and credentialed industry professionals who represent clients interested in chartering a luxury yacht in New England, are June 18-21, 2018. The Newport Charter Yacht Show is the only one of its kind in the U.S. and will feature an exquisite collection of world-class yachts for charter.

Upon the arrival in Rhode Island, the teams will be over half way through the race which is expected to finish in June of 2018 in The Hague.
The Volvo Ocean Race Newport Stopover, scheduled May 8 - 20, is hosted by Sail Newport, Rhode Island’s Public Sailing Center, the State of Rhode Island, the R.I. Dept. of Environmental Management (RIDEM) and Commerce RI.

“The 2017 Charter Show was a huge success with 25 yachts participating in the show and over 80 charter brokers attending from around the US,” said Eli Dana, Newport Shipyard’s general manager. “One of the highlights of the show was the final party and awards where nearly every yacht crew attended to cheer each other on and graciously accept their crew competition awards,” Dana continued.
