THE RACE
Sail Newport will serve as the Organizing Authority for the race. This is a fundraiser to help the victims of the Maui wildfires so please recruit donations from your crew, neighbors, friends and family. Thank you! Let’s demonstrate how much Narragansett Bay cares.
Sailboats
All sailboats over 22′ are invited, even if you don’t ordinarily race, we will assign a rating for your boat. We want to show our support for Maui and help raise funds for the suffering island community.
THE PARTY
All sailors registered for the event, and for whom we have a signed waiver, will receive party wristbands. There will be extra wristbands available to purchase for guests to the party. The ticket includes chowder, burgers and hot dogs. There will be a cash bar for 21+.
ABOUT SAIL FOR HOPE
In 2001, in the wake of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, Pentagon, and in the skies over Pennsylvania, a few local sailing enthusiasts scrambled to organize a regatta to honor and support those affected. The first Sail For Pride Regatta rallied over 180 boats and raised $110,000 designated for charities to support the NYFD firefighters, police and the victims of the attacks and their families.
The display of patriotism and generosity on and off the water made a lasting impression in the sailing community. After the inaugural year, the organizers retired the name Sail for Pride, but continued the event as Sail For Hope, reflecting the Rhode Island state motto and focused the mission to support local non-profit endeavors.
Charities supported over the years include Seamen’s Church Institute, Newport Harbormaster’s Emergency Equipment Fund, local public high school sailing teams, US Olympic Sailing Trials, The Rhode Island Red Cross hurricane relief funds, emergency assistance to active duty families and many others.
Fundraising Designated Charity
Sail For Hope is a fundraiser and every year, charities are selected to be the beneficiaries of the regatta. This year, the Maui Food Bank will receive 100% of all donations made in conjunction with the event (less credit card fees) and the net proceeds from regatta registrations, bar, merchandise and door ticket income. Please recruit donations from your crew, neighbors, friends and family. Through Sail For Hope, we demonstrate how much the sailors of Narragansett Bay care for those in need, near and far. Mahalo!
The Maui Food Bank (MFB) was incorporated as a nonprofit in 1994. MFB is working round the clock to relieve hunger resulting from the catastrophic Maui wildfires. The Maui Food Bank is the only nonprofit in Maui County that collects, warehouses and distributes mass quantities of perishable and nonperishable food items to those in need.
